Context
The Silver Economy has been defined by the IDB as the part of the global economy linked to the demographic change associated with the aging of the population, focused on the needs and demands of people over 60 years of age.
Currently, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is the fastest aging region in the world. It is estimated that in 2050, more than one in four people (27.5 %) will be 60 years or older. The transition from 10% to 20% will take only 28 years, compared to 30 years in Asia and more than 60 years in Europe and North America.
Today's older people are more likely to continue working, studying, consuming, and enjoying better physical fitness than in decades past. This is why they require a variety of services ranging from dependency prevention, promotion of physical and mental activity, to long-term care services.
Our objective is to strengthen services for care dependency, improve long-term care, and empower and train care workers. This purpose will be achieved through three interventions:
-
Generating knowledge about the current state of the ecosystem.
-
Building business capabilities.
-
Providing support for companies with the highest potential for impact.
Program Objective
1
Innovative services in the care of older people (+60 years), improving the quality and increasing the quantity of supply to meet the exponential increase in demand in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
2
Training of caregivers who represent the backbone of the sector's quality.
3
Prevention of functional dependence (physical and cognitive) and promotion of autonomy in older people (+60 years) to extend the duration of a healthy life, understanding autonomy as the ability to make decisions, even with support if necessary, according to people's own conscience, values, will and preferences.
